Edinburgh Africa In Motion short film competition

The winning film for this year’s edition of the Edinburgh Africa in Motion short film competition held in October, was South African Paul Emmanuel’s 3SAI A Rite of Passage. In this silent and visually stunning documentary, the viewer is challenged to empathise with fresh recruits at the 3SAI military base while their obligatory hair shave changes them irrevocably. Undercut with ambiguous and abstracted images of the vast plains of the Karoo, the monotony of the action and their initial indifference evolve to reveal intimate mirror images of their faces and feelings, exposing a vulnerability behind the rhythms of a production line set-up.

The £1,000 prize money awarded to the winning film was partially sponsored by the African Movie Channel.

The winner of the audience award was the colourful Mozambican film A Tempestade (The Storm) by Orlando Mesquita. This film shows how it takes real courage to change what is wrong. Beautifully shot with vibrant colours and passionate acting, the story reveals several layers, connected by the strength of the women in a small fishing village in Mozambique.

Both movies are available FREE on the African Movie Channel - www.africanmoviechannel.tv. Visit the Africa In Motion website - www.africa-in-motion.org.uk, for the latest news. dddd ddddddddddddddddd

Kelani's Arugba at 17th edition of African Diaspora Film Festival in New York

An International Film Festival about the Human Experience of People of Color, the 17th Annual African Diaspora Film Festival (ADFF) presented a selection of 101 films from 46 countries including 63 World, US and New York premieres.

The presence of African talent showed in front of and behind the camera in ADFF 2009. Our very own Tunde Kelani and Wole Soyinka, and with them, John Kani, Khaled El Hagar, Khady Sylla, Amilcar Cabral and Wangari Maathai were some of the brightest and most creative artists and intellectuals from the African continent featured in ADFF 2009.

Tunde Kelani is one of the most important African filmmakers today. His work has been showcased in many prestigious events in and out of Africa. Mr. Kelani attended the ADFF 09 as part of the 2by1 program presenting two films by the same director. Arugba, his latest film, had its US Premiere at this event.

Arugba is story of love, corruption and African tradition. With superb performances from some of Nigeria’s leading actors, Arugba is a beautifully executed film which functions as an allegory for contemporary Nigeria.

Set against the backdrop of a corrupt society seeking cleansing, rebirth and nationhood, with all its attendant intrigues, Arugba intimately presents a world in which modernity and tradition exist alongside each other but seldom in equilibrium.

Clinic Matters is a comedy series that dramatizes the everyday experience of a busy doctor, his committed nurses and their “interesting” patients. Starring AMAA award winner, Emeka Ossai, Clinic Matters is a unique story as it comically depicts real situations in an every day hospital. It is the first original medical comedy series in Nigeria.

Clinic Matters focuses on a professional doctor and nurses, who are faced with the challenges of attending to their numerous patients with crazy medical problems. The very pretty nurses are also a bunch of interesting characters as they interpret their roles adding so much fun to the show. Each episode is educative and extremely spiced with humor as its unique brand of humor lies mostly in real life situations.

With genuine characters and a gentle pace, Clinic Matters is a comedy that is instantly likeable. It’s educative, entertaining and most importantly, hilarious. It’s a must watch for every home as every character displays humor at its best.

Clinic Matters is now showing on-demand exclusively on AMC - www.africanmoviechannel.tv
